I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this issue for me. I recently installed a 2nd hard drive (320GB) in my pc and reinstalled windows on my first hdd (80GB). What I want is have nothing but win xp, programs, and backup files on the 80GB hdd and everything else on the 320GB.
I've moved everything from C:\Documents and Settings\User to the F:\ partition on the larger hdd with the exception of the "UserData" and "WINDOWS" folders. I changed the value data in the registry @ HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders, logged out and back in again (under a different admin login when necessary) to delete the original folders on C:\.
This all went smoothly and I am not having any major problems but C:\Documents and Settings\Frank\Local Settings and 2 folders within "Application Data" and "History"keep regenerating.
I'm not sure what I am overlooking. The one thing that I found online about this states that "Local Settings" should not be moved but doesn't give any reason.
Should I move this folder and its contents back to its original location?
Please help. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Those are system folders that you can not change their location. Just like you cant move alot of the folders inside the windows directory. There is no need to move those anyways. As long as your My Documents folder is backed up/or moved ot the other drive your fine.
When I moved it, I went into the registry and changed every single value that had C:\Documents and Settings in it's name.
For you at present, it seems as though some application's are not aware of the change, as their registry keys will still point to C:\.
You might want to search around on the net for something, because, as well as what I said above, you have to change values like C:\Document~, and so on.

p.s. I do not have a LAN.
The best way to do this is to create folders on your 320 to store data. Most programs will let you change the default folder, which is C:\Documents and Settings, to what ever you designate. For downloads make sure your browser is set up to always ask where you want the file downloaded to. This has the added advantage of not having your data in any way associated with a Windows system folder. Once you get used to designating the folder you want to save things to, it's a snap. Learning curve a day if that.
Thanks for your responses. My goal is to have windows xp, programs, and backups on the 80GB drive and as little else as possible. "My Documents" is simple to move as you only have to right click and select a new target location. Unless I'm mistaken, the rest of the folders in "Documents and Settings" require changes to the registry in order to be moved.
I was having the problem of a couple of folders regenerating in their original location on C:\. I have since corrected this issue.
- The history folder stopped regenerating after installing IE7.
- The "application data" folder within "local settings" is found in a different place in the registry tree. It is in "Shell Folders" rather than "User Shell Folders". The rest of the path is the same.
What still confuses me is why Microsoft didn't make moving these folders easier.
Does anyone know if there is some disadvantage to moving all of these folders off of the system drive/partition?
The only disadvantage I can think of would be if there is a program that expects those folders to be on C:\ and doesn't bother to check the registry to see where they're sitting. I haven't heard of anyone actually attempting this before, so you'll have to let us know if you run into any issues.
