After a recent incident involving a dodgy (round) IDE cable, I was wondering if there was a Linux Live CD/DVD aimed at testing, soak testing, and possably bench-marking a new/suspect PC?

Anyone know of one?

Well Knoppix is a general purpose Live CD and DVD with a lot of tools on it. and is also a fully functional Linux system, you can do almost anything with it.

http://knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

It includes memtest86+ for testing RAM and many other tools you can use to make sure your system is working :)

It's big at about 700MB for the CD and 4Gb for the DVD but it sure comes in handy! :)

Check it out:

Make sure you get the -EN version if you want English or the -DE version if you want German and check the md5 and sha1 sums to make sure your download is good.

If you want to just test the RAM you can use a memtest86+ CD

http://www.memtest.org/

Which is really tiny by comparison to Knoppix, of course it can only test RAM.

Knoppix or any other fully functional Live CD or DVD can test the whole system.

Many thanks,
I've used a cut-down version of Knoppix before to recover a busted Linux system, what I didn't know was that there was a much larger (8 Gig) version available.
I think I'd better find a Linux DVD supplier, if I down-load the full version my ISP will probably start sending me death-threats (again!).

Damn Small Linux aka DSL is only about 50MB :)

It is not as full featured as Knoppix but it is quite functional.

Where are you physically located? State/Province/Country if you don't mind .

I'm (currently) in the UK, Linux disk supply isn't too reliable in this country, last ones I ordered arrived complete with off-ballance stick-on lables!

Love it or hate it, have you tried ebay.co.uk or any of it's competitors?

I have seen many CD / DVD sellers on ebay.com and there have to be some in the UK, some may even accommodate special requests.

As always make sure you check their feedback and stuff, there are a lot of shady sellers on ebay and elsewhere online.

You may find a good supplier somewhere else in Europe or even in the US or elsewhere.

Yeah, there's distribution named Inquisitor Linux that does precisely what you say: there's a Live CD that can be used to boot without any OS involved and test your hardware from top to bottom.

I'm UK and have quite a few bits sat on my hard disk. Whilst I'm also capped I do have access to a 16Gb pen drive and a non capped connection. Let me know what you want and I might get seasonally generous and post you a DVD.

Ya can't beat an audiovoodoo[TM] brand DVD but Ubuntu and various other distros have a free CD program too, if you can afford to wait a while :)

Jesus, I'm going to have to ask them to introduce colour coding or something to clearly show any post over 6 months old. We've had a few grave robbers down the other lately :(
