I have GA-945GM-S2 mobo and want to upgrade to a E6600. What chipset will be best for this processor 945 or 965? Some tech told me that the 945 chipset will support C2D processors, but it is more of a hack around. I was told the best would be 965 and higher. Is there any truth to this or will I get equal performance with either chipset?

My E6600 ran fine in my GA-945GM-S2 before I got my 965-S3. My E6400 is currently sitting in my GA-945GM-S2 and not having any issues. (See my signature) It wasn't a "hack" but an updated revision of the models on the boards with newer VRM's to support Core 2. |

945 will do but i wouldn't bother. 965 or 975 is more reasonable, as long as you get the P or X, not G |

If you want to upgrade your mainboard then get a mainboard with the new Intel P35 chipset. It beats all current chipsets in performance, features, OC-ability and fully supports Penryn CPUs. |

945 is FSB800 or 4*200, 965 is 1066 or 4*266 .6600 is for FSB 1066 if you wont to use the full power of 6600 then it is 965.intel made 4300 for the old 945 chipset(which is for fsb 800)about nvidia chipset makes sence only if you are a gamer and only 680i in SLI configuration otherwise it is stil intel chipset for intel cpu.in all other cases intel chipset scores better in the benchmarks. your combination GA-965P-DS3 with E6600 is very good one. |

the reason the 945 is able to suppor the core 2 duo is becuase it is originally a 468 socket. its REAL use was to be able to alow lpatop to use core due which run the same voltage as a core 2 and have similar features.
