i am looking at getting another laptop soon, can anyone recommend a new laptop in the $1200 range that is compatible with ubuntu 7.04 in which i will upgrade to 7.10 when it is ready. i know that it is possible to get things running if you really want to but i am hoping someone might know of a good stock model/config so i dont have to spend to much time to get the thing to work right, i am very pressed for time these days. much thanks if you can help.

Any HP, Dell or Lenovo laptop designed to run Linux should work.

I am not specifically recommending any of them.

There are other companies selling Linux friendly laptops as well.

On laptops the most common problems are the WiFi, onboard modem, onboard audio and sometimes the onboard LAN.

If the WiFi is on the compatibility list at http://madwifi.org/ you should be in good shape.

The modem will probably be trouble no matter what.

If you need decent graphics I would recommend a laptop with an nVidia card.

ATI should be good to go in a few weeks / months after the new drivers mature.

GL :)

A quick google search revealed these links

The laptops they list on their page should definitely work reasonably well.

Again I am not specifically recommending any of them, nor am I recommending a specific vendor.

Be sure to research the vendors carefully, there are a lot of bad apples in the industry.

Hope this helps :)
