First shooter I ever played was Quake 1, and I found it entirely addicting.
I must've played it 30 times to date having bought it when it was two years
old (or so) from original release date. But I was never able to get the mouse-
looking to work properly, I must always use something like q and z keys to
look up and down. I know there is a command for it that "makes it happen",
and it does work, but not like it should or as it does normaly in quake 2... it
works very strangely, to the point of deciding not to use the command.
Anyone know if there is an update for it? Is the current sale version updated
properly for WinXP? Is there some software technique that cleanly resolves
this deep mystery? Is there a hacked correction file up for download somewhere?

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Thanks all,

Alex

What I did:

added "+mlook" without the quotes in my ID1 directory in my Quake I
directory, and then in the config.cfg, at the bottom, changed
'crosshairs' to 1.

Now it feels just like it should.

whoops, forgot to mention I put it in the autoexec.cfg file.

Alternatively, you can simply just type +mlook in the console when
starting the game, but you'd have to type it each time you start
up--thus, the reason why you put it in autoexec.cfg

But yeah, I know what you mean. I actually just made a post about it
minutes before you did, looking up and down with the keyboard just does
not sync well with how fast I move around.

Too bad for me, I do not have an autoexec.cfg file anywhere.
My autoexec.bat is "not a valid win32 application". I am
using XP home. And when I use +mlook, the mouse will no
longer "turn" but side step...? Can I have that link you found?

Hey,

Just make your own autoexec.cfg file in the ID1 and set it so
lookstrafe/spring is off in the normal options.

Open Notepad, type the following:

+mlook
crosshair 1

save the file as a text file, name it autoexec.cfg
put it in your ID1 folder
Run the game, have fun :)

You have to delete the OpenGL32.dll file found in the Quake directory.

Okay I think this is it, correct? http://www.planetquake.com/proquake/ I grabbed
glq8_27.zip, wqpro350.zip, glpro350.zip, locs.zip, all are installed and quake
looks and acts perfect in every way. Except now I am stuck on 640x480, no change
cursor available in the gui I and must type in the resolution in the console. I do not
know the "way" to type it in, or how the text is configured to 1024x768x32... Can
I make a permanent rez in either cfg files, so it will open the way I want it?

In the shortcut to Quake I that you make, add this to the target line
(outside the quotation marks):

-width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 32

Except if you want to use another resolution, substitute out the
1024/768 with the one you need. the -bpp 32 means the color depth-- best
leave that the way it is.

Cheers!
