I am building my first computer in a few weeks. The reason I am building it is to play World of Warcraft to its full potential and to learn more about computer to make a career out of it. My uncle suggested going with Linux or Mac so I could learn another operating system. I know Windows XP very well and I figured knowing my way around each OS will give me an advantage in my future career. So I want to get Linux but I have a few concerns.

(1) Does World of Warcraft work with Linux?
(2) Will I have a hard time installing Linux and getting my first home made computer running with it?
(3) Will I have a disadvantage and wish I went with Windows?
(4) Does it cost more?
(5) If I do decide to get Linux which one do I get?

If any other things pop to mind let me know!

1. They SAY it will, but mostly won't due to lame emulation programs
1(a). World of warcraft will destroy you.
2. depends, do you want a fruity auto install, because that's not going to help your IT career at all.
3.yes, for some time. Mostly Nostalgic BS that is safe to ignore.
4. yes, in the long run, it will eat up your human resources
5. ANYTHING but ubuntu, it's designed to be 'easy to setup' so you will not really learn anything from it. useless for your career.

By the way, you say you are building a box? You may want an excellent fixed disk.

Splendid
Open source is great, highly recommended.

1. you can make it work but there may be some headaches. WINE is your friend.

You may have better luck with Cedega ( commercial version of WINE ).

2. With a modern distribution such as Ubuntu 7.10, Fedora 8, centos or others - absolutely not. They are quite easy to install.

3. I do not think so, but if you want it for heavy gaming dual boot Linux and XP.

4. It is legally free so your licensing costs will be $0 vs. $287 for XP Pro retail or $320 for Vista Ultimate ( candidate for the worst OS ever made award ).

You can have Linux for the cost of a blank DVD. There are thousands of legally free applications you can install.

Commercial games and applications are also available for Linux if you want to pay for them.

5. Ubuntu 7.10, Fedora 8 http://distrowatch.com/

6. Check your hardware for compatibility before you buy any parts. If you give us a list of parts we can tell you if they will work well.
