Download the vista ugrade advisor (from ms) and run it. It's free and does a good job determining if you have any hardware/driver issues.

I would advise 32 bit version of vista as 64 bit leaves you less wiggle room. The upgrade advisor might say you can run 64 bit; but there might be some software and external hardware that might give you problems if are not careful with 64 bit. I agree with joker on running the upgrade advisor; but be aware you will need at 2 gigs mem to run vista effectively.
