If i were to run Vista 32bit and 4x1 gig of Ram, i realize that im not going to get the full 4 gigs of memory, but would this setup still run in dual channel mode with 4x1 gb even though windows won't use it all. I guess my thinking was that if windows only sees 3 or 3.5 gb will it think its not in dual channel mode?
if it won't run in dual channel with this 4x1 setup is it faster to run 2x1 or leave it 4x1 and run in single channel mode?
I believe it will still be seen as dual channel. The amount of addressable system memory you will have should be roughly 4GB - 512MB - video memory size/aperture - 16MB, although Vista 32-bit has a maximum of 3.25GB visible regardless.
Running 32 bit Vista here on 4 1 GB DDR2 RAM, and my personal experience is:
1) The OS recognizes 3.25 GB of system memory as being available to use for applications.

This is to be expected because of addressing limitations on a 32 bit OS. My only~somewhat~technical understanding of why is the OS will reserve a chunk for itself (256BM~ish IIRC), plus another large chunk which is supposed to be roughly equal to the amount of video RAM. What is left after the system has made it's demands is what is displayed to the user.
2) YES it absolutely does run in Dual Channel Mode.
