has anybody managed to install the ati proprietary driver for an ati 9550 on ubuntu 7.10 and get the opengl running? i've searched the web and all that i found didn't help - i always get the mesa opengl and not opengl from the new driver install

It works on my x1900GT, but that is a *much* newer card than the 9550. IIRC, the 9500 series may not be supported on the latest drivers. Execute the following command less the quotes and tell me what you see: "dmesg | grep fglrx"
