Have you erased the operating system from the pc?

You won't find the product key on the CD.

What you needed to was run a program like magic jellybean or SIW to discover your product key then reformat the drive and reinstall the operating system.

You may need to phone Microsoft and explain your plight.

Good luck with Microsoft... Why should they believe the Cd is genuine and isn't borrowed?

Buy a licence (often comes with the Cd) at eBay. Typically 1€ +shipping for Nt4. Same for a Server edition, which allows 4 processors or cores instead of 2.

Thanks Regular. You have answered my question....

I will go to another PC and download Magic Jellybean:
Place the Workstation CD in the CD drive and
then do a find on the CD drive with the Workstation disk in it.
discover the product key (Write it down)

(Right?)

Place the Workstation CD back in the orignal PC
Enter the product key and complete the installation

Keyfinder can only recover the Product Key from a hard drive that has Windows installed. The Product Key is NOT on the CD.

^^^ As Grumpy said... the product key is not on the CD.

Sorry, I might have confused you with my response.

Basically if you have already wiped the drive / formatted, there is not much you can do except phone Microsoft and hope they understand.

You needed to retrieve the key before formatting.

Anyway, you need a licence, physically on a piece of paper, in order to use Nt4 legally.

So why bother with long operations, instead of buying a used licence at eBay?

Don't worry about so-called Oem licence linked to hardware. Everywhere courts were asked in Europe, they told this was rubbish, and customers may resell Oem licences separately.
