Is it possible to use a USB controller on quake under winXP?

In the commands it says that 'joystick detected' but when I use the joystick
nothing happens. I can't set joystick buttons in the config either.

Any ideas?

The game is really OLD! So probably not (I could be wrong!). But what is your
opinion on using the keyboard and mouse? I tried the joystick long ago (years ago
in fact), gave it up right away because of the dynamics of K&M play, comparatively.

USB shouldn't be a problem, as far as I know, but I wouldn't recommend using
a joystick. That is better for flight sims, whereas the mouse is better for
first-person shooters.

I would also recommend using a more up-to-date version of Quake (since it
became open source years ago), such as FuhQuake, which is turning out to be
probably the most dominant version:

I'm using winquake which I discovered somewhere and it detects the usb
stick, but wont let me use it.

Anyhow, what is it with all you people opting for keyboards and mice on 1st
person shooters. I feel like such a geek using the keyboard :p
