Just wondering if any of you folk had any suggestions on mobile phones that play nicely with Linux. My faithful old handset has given up the ghost and I'm going to have to pick up a new handset ASAP as the backup brick is just too old and antiquated for my uses. I appreciate that most vendors only supply windows tools to sync address books and the like but I know there are some open source applications that allow you to do much of what I want.
I'm not after MP3 playback but something that has a half decent camera and basic organiser would be nice. I'd love to be able to use my PC to compose SMS messages, sync contact information and also if possible diary information. I'm on a budget so smartphones are out of the question. If you know of something that works well any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm looking towards a K800i at the moment as they can be had for sensible money round these parts. I just don't know if I'll be able to use it with Linux in the way I want.
Other dwelers still haunt me even here! I'm actually funding this one from the money I set aside from the payout, so your taxes are safe. However I should say thanks for the nice cold lager sat on my desk as I type
I'd already had a chat with Mr Smart regarding my options and whatever phone I get will likely be getting the full 'unbranding' treatment. The mic died in my good handset so now I'm on a 5yr old brick that whilst funcitonal has cruddy reception, zero features and an old battery.
I did do a bit more reading after I'd posted this and had heard mention of BitPim. I'll now take a closer look into it and see what I can find. The problem is that I really would like the 3.2MP or better camera feature. As you point out I'm not working so I can't really aford both a camera and phone. It would be nice to have for getting some of the cycling missions captured.
Looking at the BitPim list a lot of the models listed seem to be US. I'm sure UK varients of the same model should also work as on the whole the changes are not that great.
@Linux_0 - Thanks for the heads up on the corruption issue. I'd read a good few reviews and nobody mentioned any problems. I'm not sure if the unbradning and moving to the latest factory firmware would prevent the issue Grrr... Unfortunately the K800i was the only phone that really ticked all the boxes this side of £70, but that's not to say that there are not others out there...
Having had a look at BitPim I'm not impressed. The support is lacking for most handsets and certainly could not be described as extensive. Kmobiletools and Genoki look like far better options. For most of what I want to do I think Kmobiletools should do the trick and certainly seems to offer better support than BitPim. There is also the Moto4Lin project which looks interesting if I end up going the Motorola route.
