Hi,

When a pocket/pc PDA is used for something important, e.g. running
some aircraft navigation software, it is recommended to do a reset
before any use, so one is sure one is starting with a known
encironment.

Is there any way to set up pocket/pc to perform a soft reset upon each
switch-on?

Is there any way to set up pocket/pc to perform a HARD reset upon each
switch-on, and automatically reload a backup from an SD card?

Thank you for this!

Is there any way to do a hard reset, followed by the run of the
Backup/Restory program to reload everything from an SD card? Or
perhaps to restore an O/S image (would be a LOT faster) - these
solutions are available for PCs; I think one is called Deep Freeze or
something like that, and the reasons are the same: start off with a
known clean environment.

one option might be to move the current shortcut to your app to the
"startup" folder, then create a new shortcut and give it the name of the
critical app in the "start_menu" which points only to the soft reset
utility.

The new shortcut would only execute the reset, but the critical app
would then start on reboot.

Please note... if you do this, you may loose "unsaved" information in
other apps such as recently typed text in word or notes where the
doucments are still open.

I used the wrong terminology.

The O/S is in FLASH and should survive what is called a "hard reset".

PDAs use additional FLASH to store applications. A hard reset wipes
this but a soft reset does not.

PDAs also use battery backed up CMOS RAM to store application data and
configs. A hard reset wipes this too but a soft reset doesn't.

Ideally, I would like to restore a PDA to the state where anything in
FLASH is untouched but the RAM is wiped. There doesn't appear to be a
way of doing this. A soft reset doesn't wipe anything (except stuff
you've just typed in in say Word) and a hard reset wipes out all the
applications too.

When I referred to doing some sort of block restore, I was thinking of
restoring the FLASH used to store applications. Typically, this might
be only 10MB.

I realise the above is a simplification.
