I have an x2 4200 @ 2.6 It's 939. Also have 8800 GTS, 2GB OCZ. I'd like to get th x2 6000+ but it's only AM2. I don't want to buy a new mobo + new memory + new cpu. I had to do a huge upgrade just to get from agp to pci-e. I refuse to do this again.

Will they release an x2 6000+ 939 in the future or am I stuck like I was with agp?

I can't remember the last time I was actually able to upgrade my CPU without switching the mobo. Now to upgrade my cpu I need a new mobo + new memory??!

Check out the Opterons. The 175/185 are great chips that overclock well. You could get the 185 to 3.0 easily with air and maybe minor voltage tweak. The 175 can hit 3.0+ as well, but will require more tweaks to find the sweet spot.

Yeah...no more new s939's will be made. So FX-60 is the highest desktop CPU you can get, or even better..an Opteron. GL :)

I haven't heard of anything new being planned for Socket 939... I think you knew the answer to your question when you asked it. But hey... it didn't hurt to ask!

I find myself in a similar situation with my 4400+, but I've long since accepted that I'll be using new memory on my next build. Either my mobo/CPU/memory will be a hand-me-down to a friend or I'll be using the memory on one of those RAM drive things. I figure that'd up my geek factor a bit.

it just a bit different between your x2 4200+@2.6g and 6000+,you can play the game well in next two years by your current system

I was hoping something would come out later like the x1950 pro came out for agp.

The x2 6000+ at $240 is a great deal. I don't see why they don't make a 939 version.

I really think by making upgrades more difficult and costly they're killing the pc gaming market.

To move to dual core...I needed a new mobo
To move to 8800...I needed a new pci-e mobo
To move to faster dual core..I'll need a new mobo and new memory.

I like new architectures but I just wish they would support the old architectures instead of trying to force people.

Don't count 939 out just yet. My 'lil system that could' has been chuggin right along since I popped an Opty and the GeCube X1950XTX in it. It still gets awesome frames in BF2142 (60-90 avg, 40 min).

However, as a cautionary tale, if you decide to ever upgrade your gfx to the GeCube, either buy an aftermarket GPU cooler, or make sure to modify the stock cooler to keep a tight fit against the GPU. Those things overheat quite frequently if the TEC manages to seperate itself from the die. The stock cooler is just too heavy and seems to (eventually) cause that issue for everyone who gets it. I got tired of it and put the Zalman Fatality GPU cooler on it. Idle is about 6 deg cooler now and after a 4 hour + BF2142 session, the temps never peaked above 65c.

I would love to put Oblivion on my machine just to see what it could do, but I hate the game and would never buy it just to basically run a benchmark.

I totally agree MowTin. I recently upgraded my 939 3500+ to a 939 X2 4600+. SupCom was chugging something chronic on my 3500 and I desperately needed a new proc, but didnt want the huge upgrade.

I went to the retail store of a big online UK retailer and asked for a 4200 X2 - I got chatting to the guy on checkout and he looked in the back and found a single boxed 4600+ that wasn't advertised on their site! Bonus!

Get an Opteron 170 - with a small amount of luck you'll get it to 3GHz.

But to be honest, you wouldn't really notice much difference between your overclocked 4200 and this or a 6000+

Yeah, I love the old 939 but, alas, it's dead (according to AMD). I think it is nearly impossible to get an FX-60 (around Feb. you could get one for $200, which is when I bought mine) now, they are either out of stock or way overpriced. Your best bet is to get an Opteron, I think that they may still be priced reasonably.

As for 939 performance, my FX-60 beats a 2.4GHz Core 2, so, although it is far from top-of-the-line, its still a great CPU.

Nope, 939 is deader than a doornail. It's already been EOL'ed and you'll be lucky to find any chips for it. The fastest 939 chips are the Opteron 185 and FX-60, both of which are 2.6 GHz, 2x1 MB L2 chips. However, you won't see that much of a difference between them and your 4200+ at 2.6, even if you OC the other two. They'll get to 3.0 or so, which is only 400 MHz faster. You'll also not do THAT much better if you went Core 2 Duo either as the E6600 performs like a 3.0 GHz K8.

Best bet is to wait and get an entirely new system at some later time. I have an X2 4200+ in 939 as well and I won't be counting on keeping much.

Sucks, I was hoping to OC the x2 6000+ to 3.5. Would have been nice.

If I can play Crysis and other titles without problems then I'll just wait for the next big thing before emptying my pockets again.

The X2 6000+ won't go up to 3.5 unless you use ridiculous cooling like phase-change or Peltier. 3.1-3.2, maybe 3.3 if you're lucky is all you'll see out of AMD K10 chips on 90 nm like the 6000+. The 6000+ is as high as AMD could squeeze out reliably.

Heeeh, if they did it  Current AM2 90nm chips are much better binned ( run with less voltage/cooler and OC much better) than S939 G4 and G6 revisions. Just today I set up an AM2 X2 4200+ system for a friend of mine... No way she'd OC it, but I managed to make it run an 1.10V; Prime stable and I just didn't have the time to try any lower voltages... and it was a standard 89W (stock 1.35V) part; try to do it on a S939 X2.
Bottom line; Socket 939 is just as dead as Socket 754 and from the user perspective it's a sin because this package has all the potential to house all K8 chips up to the X2 6000+ but from their point of view, they surely consider more reasonable that you should upgrade to an AM2 board and purchase DDR2 memory before you get it.
