I have the opportunity to assist a relative in the purchase of a big
screen TV. The relative does not currently have a big screen TV. The
relative is rich in $$$ and has advised me that money is not an issue
in this project. The viewing room size is approx 14 feet wide and 45
feet deep. The relative's seat in the room is currently approx 15 feet
from the viewing wall and offset to the right. The relative is 80
years old and watches alot of TV. TV shows watched are mostly news,
sitcoms and old-time movies. The relative also watches Sunday local
church sermons recorded on DVD due to an inability to attend church
services. Visiting relatives like to watch sports (Football) and DVD
movies.
What display technology is best for this situation? (LCD, Plasma, ?)?
What size is best for this situation?
What would you do in this situation?
What other data do you need to know about this situation to make
intelligent recomendations for this purchase?
Thanks for your time and expertise.

Would this rich relative be interested in buying a few TVs for the rest of
us? :-)
The best thing is to go to the store and sit down 15 feet away (whatever the
viewing distance will be) and figure out what is big enough without being
too big. That will help determine size. I don't think you will go wrong
with plasma, LCD, or DLP. I chose LCD partly because of price, but also
because I liked the picture and the features within the set. If money was
no object, I might have considered plasma.

Sounds to me as though your rich relative is going to be watching a lot of
standard definition TV. Those church services are probably not going to
look very good blown up on a giant HDTV. On the other hand, the visiting
relatives (you, I suppose) who like to watch football are going to LOVE the
giant HDTV.
Exactly how much time is going to be spent watching low-def shows vs. HD
shows is something you need to take into consideration if you really have
his best interests at heart since low quality SD doesn't usually look very
good on the new HD sets.
