Im trying to find out what feature on a TV corresponds to the ability to
reap the benefits of a progressive scan DVD player. I am looking at buying a
new TV and the closest feature i can find that might possibly relate to a
progressive scan dvd player is velocity scan modulation. Am I correct or
not. Somebody please help. Thank You.

No. They are different things.

Velocity Scan Modulation (VSM) is an evil thing that adds edge enhancement
to images.

It is not always "evil". Result depend a lot on the video source used. On my
Toshiba 34HFX83, some DVD's look much better with VSM on (images are
sharper, edges are very well defined and crisp).

Also, on some TV sets (mine included) the VSM feature can be fine-tuned,
i.e. you can adjust the "amount" of VSM being applied. That is a plus over
sets where VSM can be enabled or disabled, but cannot be customized when
enabled. Again, by fine-tuning the VSM level on my set depending on the
source I was using, I was able to achieve some darn good results.

Nevertheless, to answer the original question, VSM and progressive scan are
indeed NOT the same thing.

That's as may be, but it makes the image a less accurate display of what
was in the source, which is a bad thing for high-quality sources (like
DVD and HD).
