A friend is offering me a free and clear swap, i get his old 7800GT and he gets my 8600GT, what do you think?

reason is i keep getting crashes in FarCry on Cooler

Not a good swap IMO.

It's about even performance wise but you lose some features, including FP16HDR+MSAA on DX9, and AF quality, let alone DX10 and all the newer features.

IMO, wait for improved drivers to fix whatever is crashing.

PS, the old GF6s had a problem with cooler, likely that the drivers need a similar fix to tell the GF8600s how to play that level.

PPS, why not simply return the card if you're not focused on DX10, take the money and buy a GF7900GS or X1950Pro both of which will clobber those cards performance wise. :?:

the shop i bought it doesnt carry high end cards.

They order from a supplier and that supplier would have to order me the faster card and it would take to long lol.

no good, at least not for anything DX9, and who knows what Dx10 will be like on the 86, well it doesn't matter quite yet, cause there are no Dx10 games out, just stick with the 7800GT

I think you should kick your friend in... well, wherever you see fit.

Seriously, why would you want to swap a new decent card for an old card? If, and only IF it'll be for testing purposes, I'd say it would be ok. Otherwise, not in a million years.

Hey just another thought.

Are you running the latest patches for FartCry?

I know that I was having terrible trouble running it on a Dell 9300 laptop with the GFGO6800 and then I downloaded the 1.3 patch for it at the time, and voila, no more instability.

Make sure you have all the latest patches for the game installed, without that it's crash on the GF7800GT as well.

Dude, forget that 7800, I have a 9700 that ROCKS Farcry. Cooler is ROCK SOLID on my card man... I'll do an even swap too, you wouldn't have to throw in anything else.

Kidding aside, stick with the 8600, better all around. Sure his card might play Farcry better but that's old news, Crysis is what you really should be thinking about.

Might I recommend selling your card for ~$150 and TA-DA! you'll have enough? I'm sure you could live without a card for a few days in the interim.
