Up until now I have always treated Unix/Linux like a very attractive, smart woman. I wanted to approach and start a conversation, but fear kept me on the sidelines, flirting with the fatties (Windows).
Recently, I have been playing around with FreeNAS (based on FreeBSD) and have found that Unix/Linux type OS's can do some cool things. I am, however, limited by my total lack of experience with these types of operating systems. When attempting to set up an HTTPS server (like Apache-SSL) I found that I didn't know how anything works, at all.
Does anyone know of a good guide on Unix/Linux for total beginners. Like how the directories are set up, programs are installed, all of that good stuff. I also have found that a lot of programs that others write (like on sourceforge) need to be compiled. So if the guide talks about that sort of thing, all the better. Unfortunately, I have next to zero programing experience, if that matters.
I don't mind figuring things out on my own, I just don't know were to begin.
