It should work if you use Fedora 10 or 11 or Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04.
Fedora 11 and Ubuntu 9.04 should be released later this month.
If you use older versions you may have problems.
If compatibility is crucial then look for Linux friendly hardware.
I haven't built any i7s but all AM2/AM2+s I'm built have worked
