Just thought I'd post a positive Vista x64 experience. Been using it since June or so with an Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe mobo and Opteron 185 CPU. Finally decided to upgrade to an Abit IP35 Pro and E6850. I assumed I'd have to reinstall Vista from scratch because in the past, my experience with XP and swapping motherboards without reinstalling XP was very painful. On a whim I thought I'd see how badly my existing installation of Vista tanked with the new mobo & CPU, but I was pleasantly surprised. Aside from having to reinstall my nVidia 8800GTX drivers and reactivate, Vista handled the upgrade flawlessly. I'm not a MS fanboy (make OSX run all my games and I'll switch to a Mac in a heartbeat) but I gotta admit, I was impressed. Instead of spending half my day reinstalling my apps, I finished Bioshock and played the Crysis demo. Go figure!
Yep, just swapped them and Vista didn't puke. Going from AMD to Intel, you'd think with all the system drivers and whatnot I'd have BSODs all over, but guess I got lucky. No I didn't run a repair. Just installed the IP35 drivers from the CD, reinstalled my nVidia display driver, and everything is ducky. My Windows score went from 5.0 to 5.7. Kinda freaky... maybe I should buy a lotto ticket?
This is the first that I've read about someone swapping HDD's with Vista. That's great if it's not just luck.
Thanks for making the post on this. Next time I read that someone had trouble replacing their motherboard, I can refer them to this thread and say "what's the matter n00b, munkus did it without troubles".
