Hi, I built my PC last week ad after some tinkering with the RAM, everything worked perfectly until this weekend.
Sometimes (all the time today it seems) when I start my computer there:

*might be a constant screech from the speakers (I tried others with the same result)
*no sound at all
*unable to play music files at all
*sound in video is out and the the visual is slowing down now and then
*the system itself seems to have taken a performance hit, most notable in games.

if this helps:
XFX nForce 680I SLI Motherboard
XFX GeForce 8800GTS
X-FI Xtreme Gamer
Windows Vista x64 OEM

Any idea what this is?

Sounds like a bad driver. Given that you have a Creative product installed, this is not very surprising. Uninstall the existing driver, go to Creative's download area for the newest one, and hope they got it right this time....

------------------------------ Which Chip? Well, it depends on which set of thieving b@stardz you choose to support: The ones who use insider trading to enrich themselves while running their company into the ground, or the ones who illegally pay vendors to not support the first group.

So far so good, I downloaded a driver that was updated yesterday. No problems after a couple of reboots. Thanks Scott, I don't know what I would do without you.
