Figuring out what to buy with DX10 support ...I generally play my games on 1280 res no higher ...would I be right in saying that a 8600GTS could handle upcoming games like Crysis pretty well (high res, but some stuff turned off)?

Or should i fork out the extra $100 and go for the 8800GTS that I KNOW will handle high res?

Cheers,
Mark

Can't tell how Crysis would run. I would go for the 8800GTS in this situation.

For one thing, there is no 8600GTX. Did you mean 8600GTS?

I"d wait until Monday for ATI's HD2900XT. This might cause the 8800GTS to come down in price.

Then I'd choice between the 8800GTS 640MB or the HD2900XT.

Since DX10 games are not out yet and the cards haven't been benched against them yet, who knows how these DX10 cards will perform. I would assume that DX10 cards will take a hit on performance with DX10 games compared to DX9 games just because DX10 has more eye-candy than DX9.

The best advice on figuring out what to buy for DX10 support is to wait until DX10 games arrive. If you need a video card right away, then next week would probably be your best bet to get one.

Yep typo ... my bad sorry. I'm so used to ready GTX from previous models :-)

Thanks for the advice. I've been hearing so much about the new ATI cards coming out but I'm running out of patience, so I researched the GeForce models in my price range and it was down to the 8600 or 8800 GTS models. But if, as you say, I only have to wait til this coming Monday for ATI to finally release then I might just wait it out yet another month.

I just wasn't sure if it's worth going for a 8800 model if I only run 1280 resolution and under. Don't they have pretty much the same technology, just more pipelines etc for running higher res performance? (i have no idea, so just asking) From what I've seen of reviews, the 8800s kicks ass at higher res, whered the 8600's performance drop significantly after 1280 or so.

If you have to choose between a 8600GTS or 8800GTS, surely it is 8800GTS will outperformed 8600GTS and worth your extra $. But it is not hurt if you can wait till next week to see the performance of ATI new R600 then decide which card you should buy.

i would not recommend you a 8600gts for gaming. I have tried all the dx10 demo with my 8600gt xxx oc and it was lagging pretty much in all. the best bet if you want make sure to able to play crysis is get a 8600GTS 320mb to play that resolution. Maybe the 8600 series will perform better in dx10 games but in the demo it was lagging even in 1024x768.

cool, thanks for the heads up re. dx10 demos

I've decided to wait til ATI releases their new range this coming week and see if the prices on the 8800 drop. That'll also give the ATI range a chance to get on some more VGA charts to see how they perform on Crysis.

Thanks all,
Mark
