I am saving up for a new computer which will be running Vista 64 bit.

I need to know what the performance difference will be between dual core and quad core.

That being said I'm not going to purchase a $500 CPU, so my choices right now are 3.0Ghz Dual or 2.66Ghz Quad.

I will be using this computer almost purely for gaming and since I am fairly nooby I'm not comfortable with OCing.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If gaming is all you're worried about, the standard advice applies to V64 just like it does for everything else: For one app with not a lot of multitasking, a faster Dual is better than a Quad. So thinking about the way things are right now, you'd be better off with the faster Dual.

But know that the exception has started to hit the market already: Crysis is fully capable of utilizing multiple CPU cores. Right now this is the only game I'm aware of (and it's 'cos writing multithreaded apps is much more difficult). But that will change over time.

------------------------------ Which Chip? Well, it depends on which set of thieving b@stardz you choose to support: The ones who use insider trading to enrich themselves while running their company into the ground, or the ones who illegally pay vendors to not support the first group.
