A little help with networking please

I have finally got ubuntu to see the network and other computers. (they are running windows) But I can't access the other computers. Every time I try I get the error message "failed to retrieve share list from server" What does this mean and how do I fix it. Right now I'm moving files with a memory stick.

What versions of windows are your other computers running? You may need to edit your registry.
