OK Ubuntu 9.04 at times I'm working on something all of the sudden I get a picture of a line of boxes across the screen and then everything disappears and I have to start over. I suspect nothing is gone and this is a feature that moves tasks around. Can someone please tell me how it works?

It sounds like it's accidentally switching between workspaces.

Ubuntu has two workspaces next to the trashcan on the lower taskbar.

You can click on those two squares to switch between workspaces.

There's a keyboard shortcut which triggers the workspace switch, you can disable or change the shortcut under Keyboard Shortcuts in preferences.

Good luck :)

Just FYI (in case you're coming from Windows) a "workspace" is like your "desktop," so you essentially have more than one. Quite handy if you only have one monitor, but doesn't beat having more than one. :)

randomizer is right on :)

They're like virtual desktops. Ubuntu has 2, Fedora has 4.

You can put them on a 3D cube :)
