I've been using an iPaq for about 4 years now, progressing through many
models and active sync versions. Currently, I'm using an iPaq 4700 with
ActiveSync 3.7.1 syncing with Outlook 2000 on a Dell running XP SP2.

I've always had strange issues with the email syncing. Specifically,
ActiveSync tends to sync many more emails than what I have in my inbox at the
time. For instance, I currently have 17 messages in my inbox but active sync
just sync'd 129 messages. Then, after it completed those, it sync'd another
33, now it states there are 8 unresolved items. So now I reset my ipaq and
resync'd. It again sync'd with 129 items, but this time has none that were
unresolved.

I typically do not send or delete emails from the iPaq, as this really
screws things up. I don't even like to read them on the ipaq anymore because
doing anything with email on the ipaq always causes these strange behaviors,
but on occasion I do need an email when away from my computer. I have not
read an email on the ipaq for a month or so.

Where is it seeing these 129 messages? In my active sync email settings, I
do not have any other email folders set to sync. When I look through the
folders on the ipaq, the only one containing any messages is the inbox, and
it contains only the 17 that it should.

This problem will get progressively worse and I will eventually have to move
all the files from my trash to a temporary folder. When I do this, the ipaq
again syncs something (I don't know what) but it usually clears up the
problem. If not, I do the same with my sent folder. After the sync is
cleared, I move all the files back to the trash and/or sent folders. When I
move them back, active sync again tries to sync something, but it won't
attempt to sync that many and it's obvious something is "better" because my
email syncing will immediately process faster. Email syncing will work
normally for a few months after this "purge", and then the cycle starts all
over again.
