More Information

Hello,

I have a system configured so that I may alternately boot either Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional by simply going into Computer Management->Disk Management and then marking the partition I want to be the active boot partition and restarting. This has worked wonderfully for several years.

During the past two weeks I began experiencing a long delay (several minutes) during system startup and whenever I attempt to access the logical disk manager via "Computer Management->Disk Management".

I have Symantec AV Corporate Edition v10.1.4.4000 installed on both the Win XP Home and Professional boot partitions. I have run it in normal and safe boot modes and it reports no issues on any of the installed disk partitions, bootable or otherwise. I have also run various spyware/malware applications without finding anything of significance.

I do not allow either OS to automatically install updates from Microsoft and am fairly certain that no new hotfixes were applied prior to the onset of this issue. Regardless of which partition I boot the behavior is the same, unless I boot in Safe Mode. While booted in safe mode, the startup time is normal and there is no delay in accessing the logical disk manager via "Computer Management->Disk Management".

I have reviewed the Event Viewer logs and the only failures present are as follows (they seem to appear intermittently but not at a regular interval):

Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Logon account: My Account
Source Workstation: WINXP01
Error Code: 0xC000006A

Logon Failure:
Reason: Unknown user name or bad password
User Name: My Account
Domain: WINXP01
Logon Type: 2
Logon Process: Advapi
Authentication Package: Negotiate
Workstation Name: WINXP01

There are a couple of Application warning entries in Event Viewer as follows:

Source: EvntAgent
Category: None
Type: Warning
Event ID: 1003
User: N/A
Computer: WINXP01

TraceFileName parameter not located in registry; Default trace file uses is .

Source: EvntAgent

Event ID: 1015
User: N/A
Computer: WINXP01

TraceLevel parameter not located in registry; Default trace level used is 32.

The System Event Viewer entries of interest are as follows:

Source: Service Control Manager
Category: None
Event ID: 7003
User: N/A
Computer: WINXP01

The TrueVector Internet Monitor service depends on the following nonexistent service: Pml Driver

Source: Service Control Manager
Category: None
Event ID: 7000
User: N/A
Computer: WINXP01

The mrtRate service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

Any assistance anyone can provide is greatly appreciated. Since both independent operating system installations both started exhibiting the same behavior, I am suspicious of some sort of hardware issue, but am finding no indications of hardware issues. I have not yet booted into the Dell diagnostic partition to see if it can find anything.

Best Regards,

Ted
