Hi, I am attempting to convert a relic compaq presario S600nx (32 bit xp, 2.7 celeron) to use with Ubuntu. The rest of my household is on Ubuntu 8.02. (all 64 bit vista) The instillation disk works until the programs begin to download and it barfs terminal code for two pages and dies in my arms. What is the best version of Ubuntu for installation? I would like to stay with Ububtu but anything with a GUI will work.

Are you sure of the functionality of every piece of hardware in the rig? Is the terminal code legible, or is it all garbage? Does it have any clues as to what the errors are? Does it happen during a specific program being installed, or does it differ?

:)

You say "the rest of my household in on Ubuntu 8.02 (all 64-bit Vista)". Not quite clear what you mean here - are they on Vista or Linux? For your Compaq you will need to download the 32-bit version of Ubuntu - the 64-bit version won't work on your hardware..
