Retrieve files on windows 95 old hd

Hello,
I need precise instr. on using ezconnect cable to retrieve my files off of a I have a wd Western Digital Caviar 6.4 GB,Internal,5400 RPM,3.5" (AC36400) Hard Drive. The HD if in good cond.
but i had to pull it from an old gateway because the optical and flash drives were not operable.
I cant seem to access the files after i connected the cable to my windows xp computer

Does XP recognize a new removable drive?
Did you also connect power to the drive?
Is the drive compressed?
Was the drive the original, or was it an add-on?

Hello and Thank you very much for your response.
It did recognize "new hardware" and the drive was the letter Q. It was powered up.
It is the original drive from my old gateway computer. How would I know the drive is compressed?
