Hi all, Im a poor student who does when not writing essays like to play the occasional fps. Im currently using a 256MB x550 that is unusable for all but the most basic of purposes, im fed up of not being able to run new releases however there is a problem. I can only stretch to about £65 for a new card :( what is the best I can do for that, is there even any point in replacing the x550 with that small a buget? im not really worried about visuals, just want to be able to achive somthing playign in games like battlefield 2142 and stalker. the rest of my system is an athlon x2 3800+ 1GB RAM, 160GB HD. any comments appreciated.

How about giving us your spending limit.

I presume however your looking for that in US dollars rather than pounds, it converts to $128.856.

Here you go dude! It will compliment your system nicely and smoke that X550.

Blammo!!

You can also look for an X1650XT. It's a bit better depending on the game but chances are unlikely you'll find one within your budget.

Yeah, it's a toss up between the 7600GT and the X1650XT. 7600GT is better if you play games that uses OpenGL like Doom 3 and Quake 4. I believe STALKER is an OpenGL game.

If you are looking for a DirectX 10 videocard, then you can buy the GeForce 8500GT. However, word on the street is that it trades blow for blow with the 7600GS (slower than the 7600GT).

I would go for the 7600GT.

ive looked on a couple of english sites and I havent found the x1950gt for less than £85, way above my limit :(

so its looking like a 7600gt is the card

Have gone ahead and purchased a 7600GT based on everyone recomendation. thanks everyone for your advice

I hope you checked on 7900 GS?

They just came down in price to around $120 in some places.

Anyway - 7600 GT is a great card.

dident even see a 7900gs when looking as I dident look above £70, have just had a quick look and havent been able to find one (not looking very hard) below £88, the 7600GT ive ordered was only £65, 7900gs just wasent in my buget :(

The 7600 GT is very solid card in this price range, I was using one till I got my hands on a 1950 pro. With the rest of your rig you should be able to attain decent gaming performances.
