My computer cut out while I type out documents or while I am on the internet

You should not be using a Windows 9x/ME computer on the Internet; it is not safe and you might have picked up a virus.

I highly recommend you upgrade to a supported OS. Learning Linux would be your cheapest route although finding someone that no longer uses a machine that can support Windows XP is an option as well and should be easy to come by.
