Biostar and Foxconn do not like Linux. You might have trouble with ethernet, sata ports and more...

Not universally true. I have a Foxconn AMD m/b which quite happily runs Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, or Solaris. Currently I'm using it with VMWare ESXi.

Hmm... I know at least a year ago, I kept reading about problems with these motherboards. Especially the Biostars. Maybe someone is running a recent build with this mobo and will help us for sure.

Some biostar boards run linux just fine.

A few foxconns are finicky but they usually work.

@OP which biostar board are you looking at?

Chipset is normally the most important factor. However if everything works fine already? Why change?

How dare you question the purchase of new HW!!! ;)

Because it's there!

Don't listen to her! You go and buy your new parts!

@OP: I recommend reading as many reviews as you can on the specific board/chipset. Lots of the time on sites such as NewEgg there will be Linux users reviewing the products; I see a Linux-related review for most products out there. So I'd say that'd be your best bet :)

@amdfangirl: Who cares about the environment when you can get a new computer! :D

Nay, not really.

Rig is solar powered.

Whatever harm came from making it is already done.

Why are we discussing the environment on a linux forum :(

It's OK for you Antipodeans. In the UK solar powered is a problem.

Sorry,

got carried away.

If you doubt your new solution will work properly, why don't you just leave it the way it is?

Biostar is, as far as I know, not too much trouble now. It's not the brand I'd recommend for an AMD system (Gigabyte gets my vote instead), but these last few years most manufacturers at least don't impede Linux in general, and several changes made to the ACPI layer in kernel dealt with most frequent motherboard woes.

@amdfangirl: it seems that the OP wants to build another system, not replace his current one. Thus, the new hardware.

Moreover, I can understand why someone would want a beefier system, and would need a mobo replacement: I'm starting to find my s939 AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ a bit... slow.

Yeh, I know.

Just trying to convince him effort is a waste.

Ah, sure - I agree, it's not only a matter of money that have me keep my 'puter for an average of 4 years (or until I manage to melt them). Still, current computer parts often come from carbon-neutral companies, contain less environment-unfriendly products, and use up less power at a given performance level. If the older system is kept in use, or properly recycled, I won't complain much.

There comes a time when that ol' s939 machine makes work more of a hassle, and you need to upgrade it.

I don't think I could still use my Celeron 300A with a generic distro, and still get comfortable performance out of it (maybe, a very light Gentoo and a major overclock might do the trick...?)

The Pentium 3/750 laptop I still have is good enough to check emails, but the Duron 950's motherboard fried long ago.

Reply to mitch074

Right now, if it's dual-core, it's good enough.

Just built new kit:

AMD_965/MSI_790-gd70 BIOS_1.4/BFG_9800-gtx+/500_g sATA SEAGATE/2x2-g CL9 Crucial/Hanns 28" /650w Antec

Kit works transparently and effortlessly with U_9.1 which also grabbed the Lt webcam, HP_1300 printer and LOn_BR.CD player and includes PTS, NV180.xx driver and DCSS stuff.
I'm scoring ~40 in PTS-Unigine & lightsmark= 480 @ 42-C with stock HS/fan. It's a damfinejob pushing modern kit by the Ubu developers.

Glitches: need BIOS update(gag) to v-1.6 to take 1-T Hdd/ IDE drive not recognized in BIOS and 4x2-G ram for x64_U-10.4 LTS is anybodies guess. Think I'll spend $30 on a new BIOS-chip when the time comes.
