I thought I'd start an official thread about any trouble/fixes offered by the latest public release of the SP1 beta.
I haven't had too much time to play around with it yet but want to start by commenting on the process.
--I got an email from MS saying that SP1 was available, could not find it for 2 days!!! I'm guessing the email went out a day or two early. Anyway, after reading through the papers which say to upgrade via Windows Update (obviously beta software not available through windows update). I downloaded the -roughly- 350 Mb file.
I had some real trouble getting the .exe file to run. But after a couple restarts and by not having anything else open, I was able to start to install sp1. Installation warns that it could take up to an hour or more -- in my case it was not an exaggeration. Total install time (after download) was 1 hr 25 min. (but I'm running a laptop, T5200 core 2 duo, 1 gb ram, etc)
Like I said, wanted to see what other people have to say about the process and any improvements. I know I saw a thread like this before... but I could not find the thread.
I just installed SP1 on my p4 desktop with ultimate (my laptop has premium) and this time it went more smoothly. The key for me was to close all other programs (I did leave McAffee open, though). Again, it did take about an hour and a half.
So far, the main improvement seem to be with the file tranfers (that damned green bar that and estimated time left seems more accurate and doesn't lock up for a second. I don't game so I'm not sure if there was any improvement on that front
Installed SP1 RC Refresh. Took about 30 mins, no problem. Speeds things for me. not objective measurements but seems pretty SNAPPY now. Some thing lots faster. Solved some problems for me also. Windows Defender for instance. No complaints, nice work! Some will hate VISTA just like they did XP and every new version since DOS !
