I want to know which is the best music player for Ubuntu and why (what makes it the best)?

Also if you have links to good windows alternative pages, please post them.

Thanks in advance.

It's all subjective :)

VLC, mplayer, xmms, kaffeine and about a dozen others are all pretty good.

My advice is try them all and use the ones you like the most :)

VLC and mplayer also run on windows and can play video as well as audio.

Good luck :)

I installed vlc, but I only like to use it for the video files.
I would like something like media monkey.
I installed amarok, but when I try to open an audio file it just says launching amarok, and the song never plays.

Thanks for the reply anyway, I will take a look at mplayer and the others you suggested.

Amarok always worked well for me. Just a shame there isn't a Windows build at the moment :(

I've used amarok in previous builds, and I like it, but for some reason it's not working now.

It just says launching amarok, and the wolf icon appears on the tray, and that's all it does.
