If security is not a concern, you can spawn an X session and launch a video player automatically using one of the startup scripts.

Do not do this on a system that needs to be secure.

mplayer also supports ascii output.

Well,it's just to mimic osx. I am making a entire custom os that rips off osx,and looks just like it. http://www.howtoforge.com/mac4lin_make_linux_look_like_a_mac One of the features ive been trying to mimic is the first start video. Yes,i know this sounds lame, it is probably violating copyright,but a video is a nice way to introduce users to a new operating system.
