I am currently running windows XP (not 98)on my desktop and was wondering if it was possible to upgrade to a newer version and if its worth it. I have the Intel Pentium D with 1 G Ram 250 G hard drive

More about : windows run vista

Don't even think about Vista or Win7 with those specs. You could run XP on that rig. Wouldn't be a barn burner, but it would run.

Even with more memory that's a dog for Vista or 7. Time to replace that hardware.

Ideally you'll want a duo core processor, 1.75Ghz or better with 3GB Ram. Depending on what you plan on using it for. I have a 2.2Ghz single core with 3GB Ram for Win 7 but the processor tends to bottleneck during many browser tabs being opened.

Is the PC you are trying to upgrade a store bought or a prebuilt from a tech? Either you'll have a certain brand with a model number or the motherboard model number (which then you'll have to open the case). It might be better to get a new PC tho if the parts are difficult to find or perhaps more costly.

XP should run comfortably on that right now. Another 512MB or 1GB of memory could increase your functionality when using SP3. With that processor you could possibly run Vista comfortably but you would need much more RAM. A Core 2 Duo processor is best for Vista but Pentium 4 sockets aren't compatible with Core 2 Duo sockets so you'd need a completely new motherboard. If you're going to go that far then you might as well get a new computer with 7.

I run Windows 7 nicely on my Dell Dimension 4550. Pentium 4 single core 2.0 ghz with 1.5 gb of ram.

You probably don't do much with it then. Pre-HT Pentium 4 CPUs aren't meant to handle anything more than Windows XP SP3.

It would run OK. BTW, Windows XP is really old and bad.

Windows XP isn't bad... it's the best OS out there after Win7. Some even say it's better than 7

Only in it's own environment. Such as anything below a Core 2 Duo (But above a Pentium 3), or when dealing with older Windows 9x applications.

Everything else Windows 7 overtakes XP in.
