Hello,
I am looking for a non-linux, non-bsd operating system. Which one would be best to try first? I would be using it on VirtualBox in OpenSUSE.

More about : linux bsd free operating system

I guess the answer depends upon why you want it to be non-linux and non-bsd.

How about Solaris?

I guess I just like to try new things. I've already used (Open)Solaris. What I was trying to say was which ones that were still in alpha/beta were the best (ex. Syllable OS, Haiku OS, React OS, Sky OS,). You know, the ones that are based on BeOS and AmigaOS (but not limited to those).

IMO there's no such thing as a "best" OS. Just try them all and see which interest you. One other that you might look at is QNX.

True! Try as many as you can get your hands on and use whatever you like.

Everyone should at least try Linux, Unix and *BSD and others and give them a fair chance. You shouldn't approach any new OS with a windows mentality or expect it to be 100% windows like or like any other OS. Be patient, objective and keep an open mind.

We've spoken about this before, but I'd heartily recommend that those who think they know Linux, and may be a tad bored with it, have a go at Linux from Scratch. You'll know a lot more about Linux, and Unix-like OSes in general, when you've finished.

Aye :)  And you'll loose about 2 years of your life doing it

It's OK, I've got time to spare.

What do you do in your spare time?

I have time to spare, but no spare time. It just means re-arranging a few priorities.

Okay, let's get back on topic :D . Where would I get QNX? I can't seem to find a download link anywhere. Is it even for x86-32 or x86-64? I thought it was only for embedded systems.

You'll find downloads on their web site. They offer a free licence for non-commercial use. It's a bit fussy about hardware, but will run fine in VMware or VirtualBox.

If you want something a little more different you could look at OpenVMS - you'll need to run it in a VAX emulator, but they are available. Or there is native Oberon - again probably best run in a virtual machine. How about Gnu HURD?

I guess the question is exactly what you are looking for, other than just something different. To be honest, most operating sytems are pretty similar at the user level, especially the free ones which all tend to run GNU software. Are you interested in the innards of Operating Systems, programming your own, or what?

There's also minix and FreeDOS :)

I've used Minix, but I just didn't like it very much at all...
Are there any GUI's for FreeDOS? I thought there was one called "Seal" or something like that? How would you go about installing that?

I tried ReactOS last year I think and at that stage it was the fastest booting OS other than PuppyLinux I'd ever seen. Once it had booted it couldn't do much else without crashing though

I'll bet I could write one that boots faster and crashes quicker.

Really? I've not played with it for over a year but I had quite a few bits of NT4 era code up and running on it under a VM. Still 'in progress' but more stable than plenty of Windows betas I've played with.

Just about every menu I accessed came up with errors with missing files and random crashes.

the best independent os I have ever come across is react os. it is binary compatible with windows it is not Linux or bsd. and it's debug feature keeps it running smooth. check it out.

I tried react os and it didn't crash at all I even created an entire program
