I am installling a fresh copy of windows XP home and for some reason it freezes when it gets to the point of installation

cdrom is old or starting not to read, disk has scratches or needs to be cleaned, usually a new cdrom will fix the problem. I go through 1 a year

As far as hardware goes, try new CD-ROM and/or Disk. Then I'd look into memory.

But also make sure you completely delete the drive partition and re-create it followed by a full format.
