You're perhaps better off burning a Linux LiveCD to a blank CDRW and then booting from that. Then you should be able to browse the Linux partitions using the Linux environment, and copy them into FAT32 or NTFS partitions there and then.

i have a system running ubuntu 9.1 32 bit and 64 bit and both those computers could see and use my external ntsf drives just fine and i use them for my network but the drives are network drives (external usb running to a hdd sharing server for LAN)... if all else fails the server piece was about 80 on newegg... but the price has gone up since christmas time... heres the link to what i have... mine is green but its the same thing http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822601001
