Is there a version of Vista or XP that I can purchase and legally install on more that one PC, 2-3 in my home?

No, you must purchase a copy for each computer. Reason, activation. Each computer must have a Product Key so the Activation can work.

I know MS Live OneCare can be installed on up to 3 computers, if you are interested.
