best software to split a file?

Dual-layer dvds are a bit expensive for me. So, I'm looking for a software that can split large files, which I can then burn on 2 regular dvds. Any suggestions? Free or not doesn't really matter though free would be preferred. Thanks a lot.

i think there is a program called avi splitter, it will split and rejoin them, it looks like dodgy software but ive used it before and it was fine lol.
