using free anti virus program for scan

is it possible to download a free antivir program, like avg or avast, and use it only for a periodic scan without having it to run all the time? for example, use avg for active, constant scan, while using avast once a week for the scan without having avast's resident shield or w/e its called runnin in the background. i hope you understand what it is that i am asking
