2 posabilities come to mind, either the hard drive is plugged into a RAID port rather than a normal SATA port, or the chip-set is too new and not (yet) supported.

Thanks for the reply. Definitely set to sata for the drives. I hav ejust build a box with the gigabyte p55-ud3 with a i5 processor, guess it must the kernel does not support it yet. Ubuntu will install but pclinux and mandriva dont see the drives at all even when using the live cd function ????
