After all, the CRT is what makes the whole of the monitor work.

If you hear a "buzzing" noise from it it might just be a dead bulb. I have a monitor with a dead bulb but I am not interested in reading a 900 page DIY guide just to figure out how to replace it. The local computer repair place here charges $188 for it, a ripoff.

This little cathode light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine!

He is talking about a CRT not a LCD backlight. It simply is not cost affective to replace a CRT assuming that is the problem an you can find a replacement CRT.
