I had a problem with ACDSee automatically launching every time I double-clicked a drive icon, so I sent them an email asking how to correct this problem. In their reply, they had me change some registry keys (listed below).
Although the fix worked for the precise problem I was having, what happens now is that when I double-click any drive or folder icon, I get an explorer window with a folder-view pane permanently present, which is something I do not want; I want just the simple, single-pane "Classic" folder view restored.
There are many web pages telling me how to turn ON the two-paned view, but I can't find how to turn it OFF permanently (you can just click the "close (X)" button to turn it off temporarily for a single folder display in explorer).
So how do I do it permanently?
I believe this has something to do with the key values:
What, exactly, do those variables "%I" and "%S" mean? What can I change it to to hide the 2-paned explorer view?
Thanks!

Here's what ACD Systems told me to change the fix the initial problem I had:

To Modify Folder Settings within Windows XP, please make the following changes within the Windows File Explorer or 'My Computer' by selecting 'Tools | Folder Options | File Types' and follow the appropriate step(s) outlined below:
- if ACDSee opens when you double-click on a Drive letter, please do the following:
- under the 'File Types' column click on 'Drive' then click on 'Advanced'
- the text in bold is the current default. Select 'Explore' or 'Open'. (if not available see ** NOTE below)
- then click 'Set Default' and click 'OK'
- click 'Close' to complete the changes
- if ACDSee opens when you double-click on a Folder, please do the following:
- under the 'File Types' column click on 'File Folder' then click on 'Advanced'
- the text in bold is the current default. Select 'Explore' or 'Open'. (if not available see ** NOTE below)
- then click 'Set Default' and click 'OK'
- next click on 'Folder' then click on 'Advanced'
- change the default selection to 'Open'
- then click 'Set Default' and click 'OK'
- click 'Close' to complete the changes
** NOTE: If the option to select 'Explore' or 'Open' is not available, you may create one as follows:
- within the 'Edit File Type' window select 'New...',
- for 'Action' enter: Explore
- click 'Browse...'
- browse to 'C:\Windows' and select 'explorer.exe'
- then click 'Set Default' and click 'OK'
- continue clicking 'OK' until the 'Modify Folder Settings' window is closed
_______________
And finally, if the above steps do not resolve the problem:
In some cases it may be necessary to make these changes in the Windows Registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
- left-click on 'shell' in the left-hand pane
- double-left-click on (Default) in the right-hand pane
- change 'Value data:' to Explore
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
- left-click on 'shell' in the left-hand pane
- double-left-click on (Default) in the right-hand pane
- change 'Value data:' to Explore
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell
- left-click on 'shell' in the left-hand pane
- double-left-click on (Default) in the right-hand pane
- change 'Value data:' to Explore
