Hey guys!!

I built a computer a few months ago, everything was working fine except it would occasionally restart itself....until now.

The past few days it has been restarting itself a lot and then today it shut down. When I turn it on it starts up and then it turns back off (95% of the time)

Its working right now, it seems to work when its on its side (mid tower) but when its standing up it just shuts down. lol.

I'm thinking it could be the CPU fan? I never could get it to attach good. Is this something that would cause the computer to keep turning off, not having the CPU fan attached properly? I have an intel Core 2 Duo with the fan it came with.

Any advice? I really dont know what Im doing..i followed a manual to build it. lol

If it works on its side, then I'd start with reinstalling all the hardware including the HSF and power supply connections. Clean it with rubbing alcohol, coffee filters work well, then apply a dab of Artic Silver. If the HSF isn't seated proberly, the machine will shut down almost immediately.

i agree reinstall all your cards n hardware, make sure your cpu fan isint loose, i that fails, remove everything excepy mobo, cpu&cooler, gpu, switch it on and leave it in the bios for an hour or two( time depends on how often you can reproduce it ) if that works install everything one at a time until you find the culprit

Make sure you HSF is on in the right direction. I had a thermaltake that would fit both ways; however it always would overheat when gaming or ripping DVDs. I flipped the HSF around and it was considerably tighter than before

Thanks for all of the advice.

It has been working fine on its side. I just checked the temp. though, and its way way way too hot. (speedfan says between 80-83 degrees C) which is probably insane.

So I'm going to try to re-install the HS...that has to be the problem

Update:

Ok, i think I have the heatsink on. Temp is reading around 48 degrees C.

It should be on pretty tight now...they need to use a different method, those pegs are a pain in the ass. lol.

Hopefully i wont have any more problems.

Thanks again

If this is for your HSF, I'm surprised you have a CPU left.

i agree with the stupid peg things, my amd 4200 was so dam easy to install, but i did learn that it has a lot to do with the mobo, ied the same HSF on 2 asus boards an an evga board, my thumbs ached for weeks( and im not kidding ) rom the asus installation, cinch on the evga board

If things get funky again on you, id hazard a guess that your cpu might be damaged from that mega hot run at 80 degrees plus thats around the point of no return for the core 2 as far as im aware
