I've got my windowsXP installed in one drive and my games in another drive, can I install XP in the drive that the games are in , and will I lose the other data there( pictures, mp-3's, and saved word doc's)?

I think the short answer will be no.
If you have the ability make a third partition and put it there.
My XP is currently on E:
Partition magic and some others will do it for you without losing data but it is not native MSoft so you will always have that extra step.
I know that you are having trouble with your current install and need to try again. Damn the luck.
Here is also something to consider.
The new install will not recognize the games or other programs and they will have to be reinstalled anyway.
Is your first install still useable? If so then drag your data files and other things you want to keep to that partition and then look at this
(edit youll have to drill down to the parallel install as I just tried the link and it only went so far)

Notice the sections about parallel install with SP1 and SP2 depending what you have.

One other option that I just have done is to buy a external drive to backup all my stuff before I take the plunge. This way I have access to all of my notes and links etc in case something goes wrong.

I reccomend the Seagate Free Agent pro 500G
ST305004fpa1e2-rk
It has USB2 and ESata connections
It spins at 7500 rpm which is the same as my internal so no lag Im not already used too.
It cost $125 at Best Buy and I opted for the PNY ESata card which XP installed with no trouble at all.
I just put it in and windows did the rest
Mine is a raid card but Im not using it as that yet.

Unless of course you tell the installer during the xp setup to erase the partition first, then it should remain intact. However unless you wipe the original drive that windows is installed on you will have a dual boot situation. It will ask you if you want to boot in the original os, or the one you just installed each time.

If you tell the installer to erase the partition first then all of your stuff will be gone.
Dont do that.

Backed everything up and did the reinstall,of course everything is working perfectly and peachy creamy, just for on the side knowledge, it took less than 4 GIG's of space to do the basic install with sp2(I have SP-1 disk so i do the SP-2 from a disk)
