when i start windows, some processes dont start right away. certain ones may take several minutes to start up. if they are not started then my capabilities are limited. i cannot use limited programs but can open folders. windows media player opens but stops responding like most other processes during this stage. its not a major issue cuz as soon as they start everything is normal. its just annoying waiting from 30 seconds to 10 mins for these processes to start. does anyone have any suggestions? i'd like to post which processes dont start but its hard to spot all the missing ones. thanks for all replies.

Whats your computer specs?
Usually long startup times are a sign of low system memory causing the OS to use the swap file alot. Too many programs starting up at boot causing slowdowns. Could also be spyware/malware/virus infections.
List your specs along with all your startup programs.

dfi lanparty, athlon 64 3800+ (single core), x800gto, maxtor 160gb hdd, 1gb ram, 500w power supply. i've looked into spyware and all that stuff but i have found nothing. do you have any suggestions for a good antivirus program. i currently use avg and avast, and spybot and ad-aware. my startup programs are all drivers, avast likes to start up when i tell it not to, avg starts up, and coretemp. this has just recently become an issue. i have never had this problem in the past, even tho i had the same startup programs. in fact nothing has changed in the past few months with my configuration.

Yikes, did you say you have BOTH Avast AND avg? That may be your problem right there. Only a single antivirus should be installed on your system at one time. Use one or the other, and make sure when you do uninstall, you close down the other one.

I have actually had an issue where webroot was running while trying to get rid of symantec, and it would NOT uninstall.

Anyway, as far as programs starting up slowly, You need to be very specific include ALL programs running in the process menu. That is AFTER everything in your computer is done starting up.

after you click ctrl+alt+del cliick on the process tab

keep the window in view, open up word or some other word processor and just type all running processes, yes there will be a lot but I am sure someone here can identify what may be the issue. A trojan often times may be running as something else, the name appears twice.

Anyway that is something to check out.

Also try troubleshooting by doing the following.

1. Go to add/remove and get rid of ANYTHING you don't use.
2. Defrag using auslogics diskdefrag or something similiar.
3. Download ccleaner run the main scan as well as the registry scan. Make sure you select the advanced options so it can get rid of the prefetch files.

Hope some of this helps.

i know that the ones beginning with as... are avast and the avg ones are self explanatory. taskmgr is also self explanatory, as are the ati... ones and coretemp. beyond that i have no idea where the issue lies.

:bounce: As cranbers said, get rid of one of the AV programs, running two is likely to be yourproblem! :non:

well i got rid of avg and that did nothing. so now i got rid of avast and everything runs fine. i have no idea why avast would do that but i'm glad i know what it is now. thanks for the replies everyone. i had another problem which might have been attached to avast as well...we'll see how it turns out.

Previous problems may have corrupted your OS installation. You could try a repair Install, or you may need a fresh install
