Hi I am building a new computer and wonder about the Vista 64, all drivers are available for my Printer ,Scanner ect so no probs there.
I will start with 2 X 2GB Of OCZ PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 and run it on a E8400,With a gigabyte P35 Board,Creative X-Fi Sound Card, and a BFG 8800 GT 512mb Graphics card.
Main use is The Sims 2 and below games.
DVD Burning and Encoding
CDR Burning
Photoshop ect
A lot Of High Speed Downloading
And for the Kids networking and Homework.
Please advise XP,Vista 32 Home Premium,Vista 64 Home Premium, Or Ultimate 32/64
Sounds like you are a good match for Vista 64. I use it and do a lot of the same stuff. Not sure about the Sims. CS 3 I believe is the preferred photoshop for Vista. I started with 4 gig of RAM but with RAM being so cheap I went on up to 8 gig quickly. 2 x 2 is good as it gives you this option.
Vista is great on new and powerfull machines. Best choice at the moment for a home based PC. Go for it.

There is no doubt that 64 bit is the future, but:
4gb will do but 8gb recommended
Make sure you got all the drivers, scanner/webcam/printer etc…
Vista 64 bit will run most of programs and games, the “wow” working ok, but make sure you don’t have old software you use with 16 bit installers, they will not run.
If you ask me the only ppl that will gain (for now) from vista 64 are ppl that can use some extra ram (virtualizations etc..)
*note- I am using Vista 64 for some time now, and it works well for my needs.
I am currently in the process of upgrading myself from a E6400 to a Q6600 on a eVGA 680i mobo. I bought new ram OCZ 4gb 2x2. Using my old video card 8800GTS 640mb. I did run Vista Beta 64bit on this system before Vista launched so I know all my equipment i.e. printers scanners have no problem as well as the application I use like photoshop. I used CS2 with no problems at all with RC1, so I would imagine it will work even better with the final version. I think I have finally talked myself into the 64bit home premium version. I hate wasting money on OSs and since 64bit is the way of the future, I would rather buy it once then buy 32bit and in a year buy 64. It was really difficult during the beta days getting drivers but now it is considerably better and will continue to get better. I can't stand the thought of buying 4 gigs of ram only to have about 3 gigs being addressed in 32bit. I think in the long run 64bit will be the better buy especially if your a power user. 8gigs of ram is very enticing.

When buying the Retail or Upgrade, there is no need to buy the 64 because both version are possible. Except the Ultimate, you can order from M$ the 64bits CD for less than 15$ (shipping). So before buying OEM, think twice!
