Linux hardy heron & ups

Hello,
Down loaded and using Hardy Heron 10.xxx a few weeks ago. While on-line the computer will lock-u p off-0line and tell user to uncheck internet function. The internet function was found unchecked, BUT TECH DID FIND THE INTERNET BOX IN UPPER RIGHT END OF TOOL BAR HAD THE LAN TURNED OFF. This icon is gry & barely vivible. How can the PC bekept on-line?
